Product information "Tornado Classic Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails"
With the Tornado Classic mainsail from Kangaroo Sails, your classic Tornado gets a new sail made to order. Three cuts are available: Beach for leisure sailing, Hightech with extra panels for racing sailors, and a Decksweeper cut. Cloth, window, battens and colours are chosen to suit the way you sail.
The sail is for the Tornado with the original rig – single trapeze, no gennaker – as sailed before the 2001 rule change. The mainsail of the rig introduced in 2001 (Tornado 2004), by contrast, has a flat top and more area.
Sail cuts
- Beach cut for leisure sailors: radial from the head and clew with 4 panels from the head, 10 panels from the clew and 1 panel along the luff. Flat, horizontal reinforcements and batten pockets in white Dacron.
- Hightech cut for racing sailors: 6 panels from the head, 11 from the clew and 1 along the luff. More panels mean the cloth is better matched to the loads in the sail and the profile is better shaped. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets in the same cloth as the sail.
- Decksweeper cut: available as an option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.
Options
- Lower panels in window film possible (Beach and Hightech)
- Multi-colour version possible
- Battens: none, with battens, or for the Decksweeper (DS)
- Qbond: optional
Sailcloth
- White Dacron: woven polyester sailcloth, easy to handle and long-lasting.
- Pentex (black, smoke, white, silver): three-layer laminate for racing and cruising with a Pentex fibre core and Mylar film outer layers, bonded under pressure – high strength and shape stability at low weight.
- Mylar (smoke, white, blue, green, red): laminate built like Pentex, but with polyester fibres.
Compatible with
- Tornado Classic (original rig, single trapeze, no gennaker)
For a Tornado with double trapeze and gennaker (rig from 2001), choose the Tornado 2004 mainsail.
