Product information "Tornado 2004 Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails"
This Tornado 2004 mainsail comes from Kangaroo Sails and is configured to your specification. Choose the Beach cut for leisure sailing, the Hightech cut with more panels for a more precise profile on the race course, or a Decksweeper cut. You then select cloth, window, battens and colours.
The sail belongs to the rig the Tornado class introduced in 2001 and sailed at the 2004 Olympic Games. Compared with the original mainsail it has a flat top and more area – the extra heeling moment is balanced by the crew on the double trapeze. This rig also includes a gennaker and a recut jib.
The cuts
- Beach – for the leisure sailor: panels radiating from the head and clew, 4 from the head, 10 from the clew and 1 along the luff. Reinforcements are flat and horizontal, batten pockets in white Dacron.
- Hightech – for the racing sailor: radial cut with 6 panels from the head, 11 from the clew and 1 along the luff. The higher panel count lets the cloth follow the loads more closely for a cleaner profile. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets in the sailcloth.
- Decksweeper – a further cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.
Configuration
- Window film in the lower panels (Beach and Hightech)
- Multi-colour design possible
- Battens: none, with battens, or Decksweeper (DS) battens
- Qbond: yes or no
Cloths
- Dacron in white: woven polyester cloth, easy to handle and long-lasting.
- Pentex in black, smoke, white or silver: laminate of three layers bonded under pressure for racing and cruising – Pentex fibres in the core for high strength and shape stability at low weight, Mylar film outside.
- Mylar in smoke, white, blue, green or red: built like Pentex, with polyester fibres.
Compatible with
- Tornado 2004 (rig from 2001 with double trapeze and gennaker)
For a Tornado with the original rig (single trapeze, no gennaker), choose the Tornado Classic mainsail.
