Nacra 5.8 Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails

Kangaroo Sails, the sail brand of Sven Lindstädt Segeltechnik, offers the Nacra 5.8 mainsail in three cuts. The Beach cut is designed for leisure sailors, the Hightech cut with more panels for racers, and there is also the Decksweeper. Dacron, Pentex and Mylar cloth are available in several colours.

Cuts at a glance

• Beach cut for leisure sailing: panels radiate from the head and clew – 4 from the head, 10 from the clew, plus 1 panel along the luff. Reinforcements are flat and horizontal, and the batten pockets are made of white Dacron.
• Hightech cut for racing: more panels so the cloth follows the loads better and the profile can be shaped more finely – 6 from the head, 11 from the clew, 1 along the luff. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets made from the sailcloth itself.
• Decksweeper cut: additional cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.

Which cloth?

• Pentex – the laminate for racing and cruising sailors: a core of Pentex fibres sits between two Mylar films and gives the cloth high strength and shape stability at low weight. The three layers are bonded under pressure. Colours: black, smoke, white, silver.
• Mylar – built like Pentex, but with polyester fibres in the core. Colours: smoke, white, blue, green, red.
• Dacron – woven polyester sailcloth, valued for easy handling and long service life. Colour: white.
