Nacra 18qu Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails

Kangaroo Sails builds this Nacra 18qu mainsail – for the Nacra 18 Square, also written 18sq or 18² – around the way you sail. Leisure sailors choose the Beach cut, racers the Hightech cut, whose extra panels give a better profile, and there is also a Decksweeper option. Cloth, window, battens and Qbond are selected individually.

Sail cuts

• Beach – for leisure sailors: radial cut from the head and clew with 4 panels from the head, 10 panels from the clew and 1 panel along the luff. Flat, horizontal reinforcements; batten pockets in white Dacron.
• Hightech – for racing sailors: radial cut with 6 panels from the head, 11 panels from the clew and 1 panel along the luff. The extra panels align the cloth more closely with the loads in the sail and give a better profile. Reinforcements are cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets are made from the same cloth as the sail.
• Decksweeper – available as a further cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.

Which cloth?

• Pentex – the laminate for racing and cruising sailors: a core of Pentex fibres sits between two Mylar films and gives the cloth high strength and shape stability at low weight. The three layers are bonded under pressure. Colours: black, smoke, white, silver.
• Mylar – built like Pentex, but with polyester fibres in the core. Colours: smoke, white, blue, green, red.
• Dacron – woven polyester sailcloth, valued for easy handling and long service life. Colour: white.
