Hobie 18 Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails

The Hobie 18 mainsail comes from Kangaroo Sails, the sail brand of Sven Lindstädt Segeltechnik. Choose between the Beach cut for relaxed sailing, the Hightech cut with more panels for racing, and a Decksweeper version. Cloth, colour scheme, window and battens are selected to match.

Sail cuts

• Beach – leisure sailors: radial cut from the head and clew with 4 panels from the head, 10 from the clew and 1 panel along the luff. Flat, horizontal reinforcements; batten pockets in white Dacron.
• Hightech – racing sailors: radial cut with 6 panels from the head, 11 from the clew and 1 along the luff. More panels align the cloth better with the loads in the sail and allow a better profile. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets in the sailcloth.
• Decksweeper – further cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.

• Window: lower panels in window film (Beach and Hightech)
• Multi-colour layout possible
• Battens: none, with battens, or battens for the Decksweeper (DS)
• Qbond: yes or no

Cloth choice

• Dacron, white: woven polyester cloth with good handling and a long life.
• Pentex, in black, smoke, white or silver: a three-layer laminate for racing and cruising. The Pentex fibre core provides high strength and shape stability at low weight, and the Mylar film outer layers are bonded under pressure.
• Mylar, in smoke, white, blue, green or red: the same laminate construction, but with polyester fibres.
