Hobie 17 Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails

A new Hobie 17 mainsail from Kangaroo Sails gets your catamaran back in shape. The sail is made to your choice in the Beach cut for leisure sailors, the Hightech cut for racers, or as a Decksweeper. You configure the cloth, colours, window and battens yourself.

Cuts at a glance

• Beach cut (leisure sailors): panels radiate from the head and clew – 4 from the head, 10 from the clew, 1 along the luff. Flat, horizontal reinforcements; batten pockets in white Dacron.
• Hightech cut (racing sailors): more panels, 6 from the head, 11 from the clew and 1 along the luff. This aligns the cloth better with the loads in the sail and improves the profile. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded; batten pockets in the same cloth as the sail.
• Decksweeper: additional cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.

Cloths

• White Dacron: woven polyester cloth, easy to handle and long-lasting.
• Pentex in black, smoke, white or silver: a laminate for racing and cruising sailors made of three layers – Pentex fibres in the core for high strength and shape stability at low weight, two Mylar films outside, bonded under pressure.
• Mylar in smoke, white, blue, green or red: same construction as Pentex, with polyester fibres.
