Topaz 14 Mainsail - Kangaroo Sails

For the Topaz 14, Kangaroo Sails makes a new mainsail to your choice. The Beach cut is aimed at leisure sailors, the Hightech cut with more panels at racers, and a Decksweeper version is also available. You put together the cloth, colour, window and battens.

The cuts

• Beach cut: radial from the head and clew – 4 panels from the head, 10 from the clew and 1 along the luff. Flat, horizontal reinforcements; batten pockets made from white Dacron.
• Hightech cut: radial with 6 panels from the head, 11 from the clew and 1 along the luff. The higher panel count aligns the cloth better with the loads in the sail and gives a better profile. Reinforcements cut flat and fully bonded, batten pockets in the same cloth as the sail.
• Decksweeper: a further cut option. On a Decksweeper the foot reaches down to just above the trampoline (usually with a curved boom): sail and trampoline act like an end plate, reducing the tip vortices along the foot for better pointing and speed upwind. Widely used in racing since the 2017 F18 Worlds.

Cloth choice

• Dacron (white): woven polyester sailcloth, good handling, long life.
• Pentex (black, smoke, white, silver): a three-layer laminate for racing and cruising. The Pentex fibre core gives high strength and shape stability at low weight, with Mylar film outside, bonded under pressure.
• Mylar (smoke, white, blue, green, red): built like Pentex, but with polyester fibres.
